The Grape Nutz
Founded in 2006, the Grape Nutz is designed to bring neighbors together to learn about wine and food pairings while interacting with one another and building new friendships. Today, more than 40 members meet for tasting events at each others' homes each month.Born at an Italian restaurant during a Marley Park Out & About, the group's beginnings were humble. "We were all unofficial small-time wine snobs," says John Wachtman, organizer of the Grape Nutz. "We got involved from the holdover of the fun we were having and thought that we could carry it into a wine club as well."
The Gardening Club
While the Grape Nutz are getting a taste of community spirit at Marley Park, the Gardening Club is growing a crop of great friends as well. Each month, the club meets to tend the community garden at Arbor Park or to learn gardening tips at one of the members' homes, says Lori Maxwell, the organizer of the group."It encourages people to step outside of their homes to meet new people and experience the joy of community gardening," she says. "It brings neighbors together outdoors in one of Marley Park's beautiful parks."
From the beginning, club members wanted to make Marley Park more than a community of new homes. Surprise, Arizona's sunny climate makes the community ideal for growing vegetables, herbs and more - allowing the residents to create a welcoming, country-style atmosphere within the quaint community.
The gardeners at Marley Park are using their green thumbs to grow a wide variety of delicious produce, both at the Arbor Park community garden and at their new homes. Surprise, Arizona is perfect for such varied crops as oregano, basil, jalapenos and even eggplant - so there's always something fresh happening at the Gardening Club.
Bringing it all Together
Like the Grape Nutz, the Gardening Club is more than just a hobby - it's a way for residents to get to know one another and connect over shared interests. It's also about giving back to the community through volunteering at events and distributing a gardening newsletter.
In fact, the Grape Nutz and the Garden Club may not seem to have much in common, but in the end their focus is the same: building relationships between residents and making Marley Park an even better place to live.
